Transporting chemicals is a specialist activity that requires a high level of responsibility. The carriers contracted by our members, are specialised in the transport of MDI and TDI and their drivers have followed a special training in the transport and hazards of MDI and TDI to undertake this important task.
Drivers who passed the test are registered into the ISOPA database. More details of this process can be found under Driver Training.
Every year ISOPA organises an Emergency Response exercise with Carriers and Emergency Services, followed by a workshop with the Carriers. Our members take turns in organising and hosting the event. This year BASF will organise the event on 21-22 September in Antwerpen (BE). If you should be willing to participate please contact us (email@example.com).

Emergency Response Exercise - Portugal 1996 - Bulk MDI
The accident drill demonstrates an accident with a PMDI road transport. A road incident results in a PMDI spill. Increasing safety demands in transport of dangerous goods requires a rigorous safety program in which the following items are key: quality of the equipment, selection of the carriers, preparation of the drivers and a distribution safety emergency plan program. The driver, although unable to interact and stop the leak, is capable of informing the emergency centre. As soon as the emergency centre has information related to the product, the right services and equipment are sent to scene of the incident. After the driver is safely removed from the truck and brought to hospital, experts stop the leak and start containing the spill. The exercise demonstrates the need for a realistic emergency plan, well tested in its effectiveness with such a drill is extremely important to minimize the adverse effect of an accidental product release.
Emergency Response Exercise - France 1997 - BULK TDI
In this exercise in France a road tanker carrying TDI was hit from behind by a passenger car on a public road. As a result of the crash the driver of the passenger car is seriously injured and trapped in the vehicle. The impact of the vehicle crashing into the tanker has caused a leakage from the bottom valve. The driver of the tank truck immediately alerts the emergency services and takes first actions to stabilise the situation and keeping people away from the leaking product. This exercise demonstrates that the efficiency of the assistance provided depends on the professionalism of each person involved and people following the intervention procedures. It also shows the importance of being prepared for emergencies, the use of appropriate spill containment materials, product transfer equipment and wearing the right Personal Protective Equipment. When an incident happens on a public roadway many stakeholders get involved and the seamless co-operation of police, fire brigade, CMIC, carrier’s staff and the Rhone-Poulenc intervention team ensures personal safety and the protection of the environment.
Emergency Response Exercise - Sweden 1998 - Bulk TDI
This video has been created to illustrate how to handle when a spillage of TDI has contiminated a person. It is important to be aware of the hazards of TDI and how to handle the risk in case of exposure. In this video a rupture of the discharge hose during a discharge of TDI causes loss of containment and contamination of the driver. The Emergency services take care of the first aid measures and the clean-up of the spill.
Emergency Response Exercise - UK 2001 - Bulk MDI
After having loaded a tankcontainer with MDI, the driver collided with a car when leaving the production area. It appeared that the container was not properly locked onto the chassis and felt onto the street on its side. The car driver was badly injured and product is leaking from the container towards the sewers. Emergency services arrive at the scene and take command.
Emergency Response Exercise - Turkey 2002 - Bulk TDI
TDI truck pulls in the terminal with TDI container for loading. During the loading operation the truck driver removes his safety equipment and returns to his cab. For an unkown reason the truckdriver drives off while the loading is still in progress.The truck ruptures the hose and product flows into the container and the ground beneath. The operator immediately engages the emergency stop button and sounds the alarm. The driver, apparently overcome by TDI vapor, is in distress and is brought to a safe location, upwind, by the operator where they wait for help. Spill area is secured. Driver is brought to hospital by ambulance. Remember to give product specific info to the emergency crew of the ambulance. Spill is contained and covered with foam to prevent vaporization. Absorbent material is used to dike the spill and prevent the spill from reaching the sewer. The edges of the spill are wettened with decontamination fluid. The container is decontaminated and cleaned and the ruptured hose is removed. Waste and contaminated equipment are collected into hazardous wase bins.
Emergency Response Exercise - Denmark 2003 - Packed TDI
This video has been created to illustrate how to handle a spillage of TDI in a confined space. It is important to be aware of the hazards of TDI and how to mitigate the risk in case of spills. In this video a drum inside of a box container is leaking TDI and as even small spillages of this product can have an undesirable effect on health the Emergency Services take all the precautions required to clean up the spill. The example used in this film is a reconstruction of a real accident which happened in 2001.
Emergency Response Exercise - France 2004 - BULK TDI
A tankcontainer loaded with TDI overturned at the plant. Container was damaged but no apparent leakages were detected. When container was lifted by a crane a leak was detected around the insulated bottom flange. As the leakage could not be stopped decision was taken to transfer the product into another tankcontainer.
Emergency Response Exercise - Italy 2007 - Bulk MDI
A tankcontainer was loaded with MDI after having been cleaned at a cleaning station. The required delivery temperature was between 25 and 30 ºC. When driver arrived at the customer the temperature gauge showed a product temperature of 50 ºC. At the same time product started to drip from the blind flange at the bottom. Temperature suggested pressure build up. What to do first? Stop the leak or depressurize the tank?
Emergency Response Exercise - Germany 2008 - Bulk MDI
A forklift truck (FLT) damaged a tankcontainer by running through the hull with one of the forks. The FLT driver is injured on impact and remains unconscious in the FLT. The truck driver is in attendance and immediately calls for help. The fire brigade arrives at the scene and performs personal rescue first. The FLT driver receives first aid and is subsequently brought to hospital. The fire brigade than takes care of the tank container leaking MDI. The sewer is covered and spilled product is absorbed in woodchips. Spill containment is put in place. The fire brigade pulls the fork out of the tankcontainer and stops the leak by applying a covering cushion.
Emergency Response Exercise - Turkey 2010 - Bulk TDI
During unloading of a TDI container at a customer site in Turkey, there is a leak of TDI from the hose connection with the container resulting in the unloading operator being splashed with TDI. The operator stumbles and falls from the container but remains suspended in his safety harness. The alarm is given and the site ER team is gathered. The unloading pump and the nitrogen supply are stopped and the tankcontainer valves are closed to stop the leak. The operator is rescued and brought under the emergency shower. After removing his contaminated clothes he is taken to the hospital by the site ambulance. The ER team carries out the clean-up and decontamination of the spilt TDI.

Emergency Response Exercise - Belgium 2015 - Drum TDI
During a regular control, terminal operators notice a leakage coming out of a container stacked with TDI drums.
The emergency services are immediately alerted . As soon as the emergency center has information related to the product, the right services and equipment are sent to the scene of the incident and take all the precautions required to clean up the spill.
