The Eco-Design Directive provides EU-wide rules for improving the environmental performance of energy-using and energy-related products through eco-design.

To be regulated under the European Commission adopted legal framework or through industry self-regulation a product has to meet the following criteria:

  • Significant impact on the environment
  • High volume of trade in the Internal Market
  • Clear potential for improvement

ISOPA Position

  • ISOPA is a member of the Eco-Design Consultation Forum set up by the European Commission Directorate General for Energy and has been following very closely the implementation of the Directive.
  • ISOPA is in favour of promoting energy-efficient appliances. Polyurethane rigid foams are excellent insulators, inhibiting the unwanted movement of heat or cold while being light and needing little space. Appliances using polyurethane are now designed to use less energy, thus benefiting the environment and costing less to operate. The contribution of the insulating foam means that ever more stringent energy standards can be met and the benefits passed onto the consumer.
