ISOPA is the European trade association for producers of diisocyanates and polyols - the main building blocks of polyurethanes.


ISOPA promotes the highest standards of best practice in the distribution and use of diisocyanates and polyols in Europe and ensures that all stakeholders can easily access accurate and up-to-date information on these substances. ISOPA connects with the value chain and other industry associations to fulfil society’s present & future needs in terms of energy efficiency, safety and sustainability. To do so, ISOPA develops guidelines on how to use diisocyanates and polyols correctly and safely, and sponsors initiatives on recovery, recycling and product stewardship of polyurethanes both in Europe and in the rest of the world.


ISOPA is based in Brussels, Belgium, and is an affiliated organisation of the European Chemical Industry Council, CEFIC. ISOPA’s members include BASF, BorsodChem, Covestro, Dow, Huntsman and  Shell Chemicals .

  • ISOPA was founded in 1987 to engage on policy issues.
  • In 1990, ISOPA commissioned a series of reseach work to assess recycling and recovery options of end-of-life of polyurethane-based articles In1995, the Logistics EHS programme was launched to encourage the safe transport and storage of diisocyanates and polyols.
  • In 1996, ISOPA published the first series of life cycle inventories (or eco-profile) of polyurethanes precursors MDI, TDI and polyether polyols in order to provide practitioners and specifiers with scientifically sound data for use in product life-cycle studies.
  • In 1997, ISOPA published the second edition of polyurethanes presurcors eco-profiles.
  • In 1998, One Step Ahead programme encouraged the safe use of TDI by flexible foam makers in Africa.
  • In 2003, ISOPA launched its website to provide industry information.
  • In 2005, ISOPA published an update of its PU precursors eco-profiles.
  • In 2006, ISOPA launched the Walk the Talk product stewardship programme to promote the safe production of polyurethanes.
  • In 2009, ISOPA launched the Polyurethanes communication campaign to draw attention to the advantages of polyurethanes in terms of comfort, sustainability and versatility and launched the website.
  • In 2011, ISOPA launched the Walk the Talk 2nd generation to provide European producers with information in the context of the REACH and Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) regulatory processes.
  • Also in 2011, construction begun of the Polyurethanes Passive House in Brussels.
  • In 2012, ISOPA published the fourth update of the PU precursors eco-profiles, this time in conformity of the first ISO standards and third party reviewed.
  • In 2013, the family moved in the Polyurethanes Passive House.
  • In 2015, ISOPA updated its website to further and better engage and inform on the advantages, safety and applications of polyurethanes and our advocacy activities.
